Mary, queen of cats

the day-to-day of a grey, furry thing

AGAIN.

I know I have said it before – I have not been as good at updating Mary’s blog as I should. The fact is, I never thought anybody read it. Today I got an email from a friend asking me about Mary’s site. So there ARE people out there reading her site and that is why I will do my very bestest to post regularly.

Mary’s food has still not entered the country. We tried to alternate the only cat food she would eat (whole pilchards and/or sardines), with fresh, boiled chicken and meat. This really grosses me out, and plus the smell of boiling meat just plain stinks and makes me feel ill. But it is Mary’s food and it is what she likes and what is good for her. It is just as well we got in to the routine of feeding her this meat, because after a visit to the vet on Sunday, we were told to take her off the fish immediately as it just compounds her skin allergies.

Yes, you read correctly. Mary was at the vet. Again. Saturday night she came inside all wide eyed, her head full of stinky gob. She had bits and pieces of dislodged fur all over her head. That only meant one thing: fight. We inspected her and found no obvious wounds.

The next morning (Sunday morning) was a different story though. Mary had a nick in her ear that turned in to an abscess overnight. I opened it up and took out quite a bit of gunk, but it was clear she will have to go to the vet. Happy happy joy joy. It is just as well because Mary’s skin was flaring up again and it was time to get that treated.

The vet cleaned up the wound a bit, gave Mary an injection and then gave us antibiotic tablets: a four day course. She gave us extra tablets for next time it happens, as Mary seems to form abscesses very quickly.

As per usual, madam is not a happy camper. I have fallen out of favour because as per usual, it is all my fault that she had to go to the vet and I am a beast and a monster for force feeding her tablets every day. Never mind the fact that I boil her stinking meat and cut it up for her and make sure it is the right temperature….. ungrateful little brat!

I have no idea how long I will be paying for my “mistake”, but I will be sure to keep you updated.

You never thought anyone read Mary’s site!? I regularly come for a browse to see if there’s anything new or even just to read through previous posts. In addition, this site introduced me to SAMAST (mass sterilization), which now receives a regular donation from me, as well as everyone I know who I forwarded their details to. So please keep posting – this makes a difference!

I’m relieved to hear Mary is off the sardines – they’re really not good for her. I’m neurotic when it comes to feeding my 11 “babies” the best, but I’m never 100% satisfied that they are on the best food there is. In fact, I’m starting to think about making their food myself, “urgh” as this may be. I’ve just Googled a bit and found some interesting links: http://cats.about.com/cs/catfood/a/home_cooked.htm,
http://www.holisticat.com/rawrecipe.html (parts of this are a bit gross – especially the whole prey bit (although it makes sense…), http://www.catinfo.org/makingcatfood.htm. However, I’ll first want to do some proper research into this.

Please think of me – I can see you’re no stranger to the punishment of going to the vet… about 6 of my cats are due for their annual injections and check-ups. This is NOT going to be fun…

Hi Lindy!

I got your email, which I will still answer :)

Yes, I seriously thought Mary’s site got no readership – I am so pleased that someone like you does take an interest :)

Thank you for doing your thing for SAMAST – that is just AWESOME. They really do incredible work and are very hands on.

I wish there was some other ready made food my little brat will eat. Cooking fresh meat is just really siff.

You are not going to be a very popular human, are you? ;)

Hello there,
I’m Lindy’s sister who lives in the UK.
My partner & I have 2x pussy cats – Amber & Mouse. Mother & daughter, though the daughter seems to be the bossy one in this house.
Anyway, Mouse developed a sore in her mouth recently, and we took her to the dreaded “V word”. Madame Mouse was not happy with the procedure, and bit the V on the hand, drawing vast quantities of Claret. It was not a pretty sight.
We were most apologetic – but Mouse didn’t in the least seem to care. At least she’s fine now – Mouse. We’re not so sure about the VET.
